Our instructor spotlight this week is on Vancouver rockstar, Yuka! Originally from Japan and now a Vancouver, CA resident, this awesome instructor is a true dancing queen. Read more about Yuka in her interview with us below!
Q: Tell us about yourself – What do you do when you’re not teaching? What are your hobbies? What other formats do you teach? Give us a little on your background.
A: Hello everyone, my name is Yuka Ichihara. I was born in Japan and I’ve been living in Canada over 20 years. I have two teenagers that are unfortunately not into dancing as much as myself. I grew up performing a Japanese martial art called ‘Kendo’, which is similar to fencing. Kendo trained me to become physically and mentally strong, independent and respectful, which has become a great benefit in my life.
I am also a Zumba instructor, specialized for Zumba®, Zumba Toning®, Aqua Zumba®, Zumba Gold®, and Zumba Step®. I began my dancing life with Zumba 6 years ago, when I started to have a little more time to myself. Since then, my life has been filled with positive energy.
On my days off, I like to spend time with my family. I especially love to hike local areas because it really proves that Vancouver is a beautiful place that is filled with nature. I enjoy shopping with my daughter on weekends, and I volunteer often at my son’s gymnastics club.
Q: How would you describe BollyX in one word?
A: One word I would use to describe BollyX is “Love”, because most of the songs we bring to class are about love and affection. Even though I do not speak the language, I somehow feel the meaning of the songs, and that’s what I love about music.
Q: What is your favorite part of BollyX class?
A: My favorite part of BollyX is definitely the performance! Everyone comes together as a team and connects with the music. Although some may be shy at first, after 2 or 3 practices, I can see that they’ve gained more confidence and I also can see the enjoyment from their shining eyes.
Q: How has working with BollyX changed you or your lifestyle?
A: I now listen to middle-eastern songs more often, and whenever I hear their songs, I catch my body moving on its own. I also have made more friends and got to learn a little bit of their culture.
Q: How long have you been with BollyX?
A: I’ve been with BollyX since April of 2016.
Q: What is your favorite BollyX song to teach?
A: My favorite BollyX song to teach is “Gallan Goodiyaan”, because it’s very catchy!
Q: Where do you teach BollyX?
A: I teach BollyX class at two locations, Steve Nash Sports Club Morgan Crossing on Monday 5:30pm and Steve Nash Fitness World Delta on Thursday 7:30pm.
I’m always welcoming newcomers so please join me for a Bollywood inspired dance fitness party!
