This week’s Instructor Spotlight is on Vancouver rockstar Katherine Tuason! Read more about her incredible story helping others through philanthropy and embracing the spirit of BollyX!
Q: Tell us about yourself – what do you do when you’re not teaching? What are your hobbies? What other formats do you teach? Give us a little on your background.
A: I am the pastry chef of The Dirty Apron in Vancouver, BC when I am not being a BollyX rockstar, and so by default I am also a foodie that loves to feed people. My son Caleb was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder when he was 3 (he is 12 now) so I spend my philanthropy time with The Canucks Autism Network teaching cooking classes to children, teens & adults with Autism and I hope to bring BollyX to them as children with Autism respond so wonderfully to music! As for other dance fitness genres, I also teach Zumba, Zumba Toning, Zumba Step, Pound and La Blast.
Q: How would you describe BollyX in one word?
A: SPIRIT – as in a person’s true SPIRIT can be truly unleashed in an awesome BollyX experience. And through BollyX, I am the ambassador of helping others unleash this inner rockstar. I thank Shahil, Minal, & your home team for this honour & privilege.
SPIRIT: NOUN
the nonphysical part of a person that is the seat of emotions and character; the soul:
“we seek a harmony between body and spirit”
synonyms: soul · psyche · (inner) self · inner being · [more]
those qualities regarded as forming the definitive or typical elements in the character of a person, nation, or group or in the thought and attitudes of a particular period:
“the university is a symbol of the nation’s egalitarian spirit”
synonyms: ethos · prevailing tendency · motivating force · essence · [more]
Q: What is your favorite part of BollyX class?
A: When you are teaching and you smile and make eye contact with that new participant & you just know they have bought into our BollyX ideals & they are HOOKED!
Q: How has working with BollyX changed you or your lifestyle?
A: Embracing the BollyX philosophies of feedback to make our BollyX family the best it can be, of mentorship to give confidence to upcoming rockstar instructors, of giving back to our community and to those around us, of allowing the spirit of Bollywood accessible to everybody in a form that allows them to grow with others in a warm, welcoming & nurturing environment – it has all just made me a better person.
Q: How long have you been with BollyX?
A: I was part of the first crop of Canadian instructors in March 2016 & helped launch it in Canada through Steve Nash Clubs.
Q: What is your favorite BollyX song to teach?
A: Funny. . . We have a HUGE Indo-Canadian community in Vancouver. During the beginning of our promo in Canada I had an Indo-Canadian grandmother ask me if I knew what a ‘Chammak Challo’ is? When I explained it to her she grinned at me and replied: “ok, you can teach this BollyX here. I’ll bring all the grandmas to your class.” So I believe that this song brought all the Indian grandmas (naanis) to my classes!
Q: Where do you teach BollyX?
A: I teach 5 fantastic classes each week at Steve Nash Clubs in British Columbia, Canada!
