Dance fitness programs bring people together for a common activity – to dance! However, every participant has his/her own reason for attending class. Some come to shed a few pounds, to de-stress and unwind, or to see friends; some attend for therapeutic purposes (for example, to help conquer anxiety and depression). Studies prove synchronizing with others while dancing raises pain tolerance, improves cognitive functioning, enhances balance and coordination – in addition to many other benefits! Programs for dance movement therapy are on the rise as another source of treatment for symptoms of arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and other chronic illnesses.
How does BollyX foster inclusion within a community where there’s a variety of needs within our classes? BollyX is designed so that anyone can walk into a class and participate, whether you choose to do a high-impact workout or modify due to injury or health-related reasons. The repetitious movements help the brain process patterns and boost cognitive thinking. The Upper and Lower Body Strength dance sequences promote muscular strength and endurance, and high-intensity dance sequences can improve overall functioning of the cardiorespiratory system.
One of our core beliefs at BollyX is that everyone should have the opportunity to Unleash Their Inner Rockstar. That is why we include a performance sequence at the end of every class and all participants are encouraged to dance without judgement. Co-founder Minal Mehta put it in perspective, “Everyone has an ‘inner rockstar.’ It’s the person inside you that is without inhibitions, beams with self-confidence, pride, and positivity! And when that rockstar comes out, the world is a more badass place!” We should embrace our differences and feel empowered as we come together as a community!
Students, and even instructors, repeatedly talk about how BollyX has changed their lives. I can personally relate to this statement. I struggle with a neurological condition and thought I wouldn’t be able to dance again. Not only has BollyX provided me with a way to cope, it has helped me to courageously embrace my circumstances and be proud of who I am! Some days are easier than others but if you think about it, we are all on that same journey, and that in itself is a form of inclusion.
At the end of every class there is a specific closing sequence that gives us the opportunity to reflect on the mind and body aspect of our workout. It is this BollyX signature ending that creates a strong sense of closure. It is an opportunity for us to remind us that we took the time to come together as a community to dance without judgement, and to reflect upon our own personal journey.
Next time you are in a BollyX class, take a glance around the room to acknowledge and respect how different we are from one another. We are all there for a common purpose: not just to dance, but also to find a sense of community and inclusion. Let us all come together to support and lift each other up, moving forward in our own personal journey of health and wellness as a family.
